Wick's Family Cemetery
The Wick's family cemetery is located on a small footpath across from the Harned Sawmill on New Highway. Elnathan Wick's purchased much of the Winnecomac lands in c.1740 and the original homestead is now Hoyt Farm. The Harned farm also belonged to the Wick's and was begun by John Wick's in 1840. The oldest legible headstone is that of Moses Wick's dated 1813.
In the center of the cemetery stands a large monument to the memory of Francis Wicks 1815 - 1887 "Erected by his wife Martha as a token of her affection" The cemetery may date back to the mid to late 1700's. The broken and weathered bases of all but a few of the headstones is all that remains today.
Along the front of the cemetery can be seen a row of stone markers that are just plain rocks. Charlie Harned who grew up across the road from the cemetery was told by his mother that those were the graves of old slaves. Slaves were buried in family cemeteries but not given headstones. The headstone of Martha Wicks who died in 1860 just before the Civil War at the age of 82.
The oldest stone that is still legible is that of Sarah Wicks "Wife of Moses Wicks Who Departed This Life April, 27. 1813 In The 70th Year Of Her Age"
