Sunshine Acres
Built sometime in the mid 1800's and home to Dr. Darling B. Whitney for many years the property was sold to the Brooklyn Baptist Young Peoples Union in 1915 and became a Fresh Air Home, or Camp, named Sunshine Acres. In 1961 they relocated to their present location in Naponach, NY.
The house was located on Townline Road just north of the Methodist Church and served as the main building for the camp.
During the summer the people would come out from the city in double decker open roofed buses and camp in tents for two weeks at a time. "They would be shouting and singing all day and night down there" - Henry Shea
On top of the hill behind the ballfields there is still the original walkway that once lead to the Assembly Hall.
Across the field and up the hill was the Assembly Hall. During the World War One the building was also used as a USO theater for soldiers stationed at Brindley Field.
Today only the left corner pillar remains of the Mess Hall foundation.
The other building on the hill was a mess hall and may have been built from and old barrack donated to the camp when Brindley Field closed after the war.
