Schools
Public schools in Commack started around 1812-14 when an old slave house on Burr Road was converted into a school house. At first it was private but then soon became public for all the children to use.
The first school in Commack was an old slave cabin on Burr Road. It was then moved down to the crossroads when it became open to the public.
The community found one school was not enough for the children and so Silas Strong donated some land for a second school to be built on Commack Road.
The Methodist Church opened a Seminary which only lasted a few years. After it closed the building was purchased to replace the original north school.
The one room school houses were in use until 1900 when a large wooden frame school was built on Jericho Turnpike.
