Signs Of Change
The senery of Commack was changing due to the popularity of the automobile. The general store now had gas pumps out front and the hotel added a restaurant.
The Werles came from Canada in 1924 to run the general store. They had the gas pumps put in for motorists and sold oil and tire tubes as well.
The Gordans owned the Commack Hotel after Wm. Mahler and later added the restaurant. The Hotel became a land mark for people driving out east.
With the closing of the Stillwellite church in 1930 the Methodist church was again the only one for miles around until the 1950's.
