The Werles |

The Werle family came to Commack from Canada in 1924 to help run the general store. By the next year they owned it and continued to operate the business for the next twenty years until 1946. |

When they first arrived in 1924 the general store looked much as it did for the past 150 years. On the side is the delivery truck they used. |

After taking over the store Mr. Werle had the front enclosed in brick with glass display windows. One reason for this was that the building was so close to the road |

Mr. Werle joined with the Royal Scarlet food chain which helped supply little businesses like the general store with their stock. |

Charles Werle stands behind the soda counter while his friend works the other side of the store. Their soda fountain is still well remembered by many. |
